We are outnumbered; indeed by an outrageous margin. The population of microorganisms is far much bigger compared to the seven billion figure of the human population in the world. These living organisms are too tiny to be seen by our unaided eyes, thanks to microscopes that are used to study these microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.
Funny enough, these organisms we cannot see, have infested and are living with us. They have infested amongst other areas, our latrines, door knobs, swings, your favorite play grounds, hand bags and even our bodies without forgetting labs and industries. The fact remains that some of them are pathogens while others are hosts for disease causing organisms. You cannot assume this; you are not safe. You need to do something for your loved ones and yourself. Microorganisms can be controlled by physical and chemical methods. Below are some of the methods:
Physical methods
- Sieving can be used to filter out some microorganisms from liquids and gasses. Membranous filters can be used or even the normal filters with microscopic pores.
- Drying also controls microorganisms. Water is an essential element to all living things. Dehydration kills organisms or prevents their reproduction. You should make sure your house is free from moisture by checking for leaks, proper cleaning and mopping and by ensuring there is proper aeration in the house or work place.
- Radiations should be used in food manufacturing industries to decontaminate food.
- Heat is a simple method of getting rid of microbes. Heat kills microbes by denaturing their bodies and destroying their chemicals of life. It means food should be properly cooked.
- The ultrasonic cleaners are also used to control microbes. They use strong ultrasonic waves to remove contaminants and these cleaners can be applied in laboratories and processing industries to decontaminate their apparatus and machinery.
Chemical methods
Different kinds of chemicals are used to control microbes depending on context, for example homes or industries:
- Alcohol is used to decontaminate social appliances. In all areas, alcohol should be used to decontaminate benches and appliances.
- Detergents are the most commonly used to control propagation of microbes. Use them to wipe your door knobs and kitchen cabinet surfaces. Always use detergents in laundry and avoid sharing of articles of clothing.
- In industries and laboratories, alkalytic agents, heavy metals and halogens are widely used. They all together help in microbial control.
- Do not forget to wash your hands before meals and any other time after visiting social places.
